Elevated carbon dioxide levels close North Boulder Recreation Center Tuesday

DENVER ( KDVR ) — The North Boulder Recreation Center was closed Tuesday after the “smell of gas” was reported at the building, later learning it was due to a leak in the pool maintenance system.

Boulder Fire-Rescue was dispatched to the recreation center on Broadway Avenue at about 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. After an initial investigation to see if there was a smell of gas in the building, crews changed the incident to a hazardous materials call.

The Boulder County Hazmat Team was called to the building to investigate where the smell was coming from.

As of about 3:30 p.m., Boulder Fire-Rescue said it had completed its investigation of the hazmat situation and found elevated carbon dioxide levels in the building, “likely due to the tank being overfilled or a bad valve.” Boulder Parks and Recreation Department posted to X saying the leak was in the pool maintenance system.

The recreation center will not reopen on Tuesday. As of 3:30 p.m., Boulder Parks and Recreation did not have information on when the facility would reopen.
