DENVER ( KDVR ) — A deadly crash was reported in Fort Collins on Saturday evening involving a motorcycle and a car.

Fort Collins Police Services reported that the intersection of East Prospect Road and South Lemay Avenue was closed as of about 8 p.m. for a crash that left one involved dead.

Driver killed in single-vehicle crash that closed roadway for 7 hours

The area is less than a half mile from UC Health Poudre Valley Hospital.

Police said one person was initially transported from the crash before they were pronounced dead. The agency said Sunday the crash involved a 2016 Ford Focus and a 2001 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 motorcycle. Officers who arrived first on scene found the Ford on its side with two men inside. The motorcycle also had an adult male rider.

The Kawasaki rider was taken to an area hospital for treatment where he later died. The pair of men in the Ford had to be extricated and were transported to the hospital for minor and moderate injuries.

Police investigators found that the Ford was traveling south on South Lemay Avenue while the Kawasaki was traveling east on East Prospect Road. Witnesses and video surveillance “indicate the Kawasaki disregarded a solid red traffic light” before the crash, colliding with the passenger side of the Ford.

The investigation into what other factors may have contributed to the crash is ongoing.

This is the second deadly crash in the Fort Collins area in about 24 hours. The previous crash occurred further south and involved one vehicle . It’s also the third fatal crash within a four-day period.

“Unfortunately, this is our third fatal crash in the last four days in Fort Collins,” said Sergeant David Lindsay, of the Fort Collins Police Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling team, in a release. “These types of incidents affect everyone involved and our community as a whole. We urge everyone to remain vigilant while on the road and to strictly follow traffic laws, which are in place to protect us all. Traffic safety is a collective responsibility that requires our full commitment.”

The intersection was closed for about five hours while investigators cleared the scene and processed evidence. Anyone with information about this crash who has not spoken with investigators is asked to call Officer Matt Brede at 970-221-6540.
