DENVER (KDVR) — An 18-year-old suspect died after a shootout involving police early Sunday morning, according to the Aurora Police Department.

According to police, around 11:15 p.m., a resident in the 1900 block of South Vaughn Way reported an argument between multiple people who lived in the same apartment.

The caller told 911 that a man assaulted a woman. The man then reportedly threatened “them and another roommate” with a firearm before returning to the apartment with the woman, police said.

One of the officers who responded to the scene was a member of the Aurora police hostage negotiation team, who was able to facilitate the release of the victim. Officers remained on the scene to negotiate the suspect’s surrender, according to police.

The agency said that around 1 a.m., the suspect appeared in a doorway and fired multiple shots at officers. One of the officers shot back, hitting the suspect.

Police said the officers performed life-saving measures before medical responders arrived and took the man to a local hospital. The man, an 18-year-old Aurora resident, later died at the hospital.

Neighbors described the scene to FOX31’s Kasia Kerridge early Sunday morning.

“There was 10 cop cars, caution tape wrapped around the whole entire building. Two CSI units and a SWAT team truck … The whole building 24 was roped off,” a neighbor told FOX31 anonymously. “The last probably nine months, it’s really gone down. As you can even hear, music in the background, on the weekends, people drinking, people hanging out in their cars, lot of fighting.”

The officer who was involved was placed on paid administrative leave pending further investigation.

“It woke me up, I heard some shots, some rapid shots,” neighbor Julian Foley told Kerridge. “It can happen anywhere with anyone … But at the same time, I’m not even surprised anymore living here.”

The investigation was still active. Anyone with information was asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
