Family displaced after Overland Park duplex fire Saturday morning

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Overland Park Fire Department is investigating a house fire that left one family displaced early Saturday morning.

According to OPFD, crews were dispatched on reports of a house fire to a duplex at 120th and Hayes Street just before 3 a.m.

OPFD said that the first crews on the scene reported the fire in a chimney box in the back of the duplex. Within minutes, the fire had spread to the first and second floors of the home, as well as the ceiling.

The family that lived in the duplex, two adults and one child, got out of the home safely, and no injuries were reported.

According to OPFD, the fire took about 20 minutes to control, and the family is now displaced. As for other residents living in the duplex, crews said the adjacent unit can reoccupy their home.

Investigators believe the cause of the fire was “careless discard of smoking materials” after one of the adults who lived in the unit had been smoking outside before the fire started. However, the case is still being investigated by OPFD.
