KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It’s the start of a new school year for families in the Hickman Mills School District and students at the Real World Learning Center are already making progress towards their future goals.

Maybe even more impressive than what the new building looks like, is the unique curriculum that’s setting students up for success.

While Tuesday was the first day that students are learning in the new Real World Learning Center, students have been taking the core programs for years.

“Students learn to collaborate and work together to be part of a lot of occupations,” Dr. Leah La Faver said.

The program focuses on hands on, project-based learning, with the goal of turning those experiences into careers.

Classes range from health sciences, skilled trades, digital design, and more. Giving students plenty of chances to learn about different industries in the new space.

“You really start to see what you’re involved in and what you have a passion for because there’s not a lot of people that know that like they’re going to want to create a resource fair, or talk to different nonprofit organizations, or even be involved with those types of things, and you get to learn that about yourself,” said senior Egypt Nelson.

According to district officials, 70% of program graduates leave with some sort of certification like a CNA that they can use post-graduation.

“Kids are going to have the opportunity to get credentials, they can go directly to industry and work. they can prepare themselves for post-secondary education. it’s insurmountable opportunities,” said Hickman Mills Superintendent Yaw Obeng.

In October, they’re opening a student-run coffee shop that will be open for the district and community.
