RAYTOWN, Mo. — Jackson County Executive Frank White addressed a crowd of people at a town hall in Raytown Wednesday night.

White spoke about what’s within his power in his role and the decisions he makes on behalf of county voters.

In an effort to keep the Kansas City Chiefs in Missouri, Jackson County legislators put forward a Chiefs-only sales tax , a quarter percent for 20 years.

Jackson County Legislator Manny Abarca believes the money could be used to renovate the stadium.

When asked if he plans to veto it, White said “that’s a little early, it really hasn’t gotten to that point.”

White says eh has the same issue as the sales tax put forward earlier this year. Asking tax payers to pay for a stadium without an agreement from the team.

Meanwhile, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas says Washington Square Park is one of the areas being considered for a new Royals baseball stadium.

White says both issues are moving targets.

“I just wish both teams would say, look, we just want to stay in Jackson County, we’re going to work something out,” White said.

County legislators also discussed Monday the possibility of having voters decide who fills the role of the county assessor . Currently it’s chosen by the county executive. White is sticking to his initial statement.

“The language that’s currently in the resolution doesn’t cover the qualifications of the accessor, so that would have to change,” he said.

This discussion continues as the county is dealing with the Missouri State Tax Commission order that the county rollback 2023 assessments to no more than a 15% increase.

The county legislator also passed Monday a resolution asking to not appeal it.

During the town hall, officials shared with residents they’re still exploring options, waiting on taxing jurisdictions to weigh in.

“The key is to get the values where they should be, get the appeals process better and make sure that we do the best we can and get people in the position where they can come in and appeal and feel they got a good deal,” White added.
