KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chester Brown was shot and killed in the street in the early morning hours last Saturday near 39th and Central.

The Brown family is now banding together following the tragic incident.

“It’s hurtful,” said Chester’s cousin Consuela Brown.

“Anger, frustration and to see my family enduring pain. It hurts so bad.”

This isn’t the first time this family has been struck with grief either, as Chester’s aunt explained.

“I lost my only child the same way,” explained Chester’s aunt Donna Brown-Thompson.

“Right now it’s leaving me numb.”

FOX4 spoke with a Midtown business owner who said people had gathered outside and heard the gunshots.

Three people were hit during the shooting, but Brown was the only one who died from his injuries.

“I just feel like my cousin was with the wrong people and at the wrong time,” said Consuela Brown.

“I just feel like that wasn’t meant for my cousin because he wasn’t a person like that in the streets or whatever. It wasn’t meant for him.”

As police try to piece together what took place that night, Brown’s family is left to plan the funeral. They’re remembering the 34-year-old fun-loving man with style, and most importantly a father.

“We have great memories of Ches, but nothing is going to bring him back, nothing,” said Brown-Thompkins.

“If you were there with him please speak up, we are hurting as a family,” said Consuela Brown.

The other two people who were hurt suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Police did share that detectives are working on leads and making progress in the case.

Still, if you have any information, you’re asked to call the TIPS hotline.
