OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — While the Chiefs work towards a win Thursday, women in the Kansas City area are hoping to learn more about the rules of the game.

WIN for KC and a local talent management agency are hosting an event called “ Let’s Talk Football ” this Sunday at Chicken N Pickle in Overland Park. Organizers drew up a play to empower women to talk about the sport.

“They’re so welcome in the conversation,” Founder and CEO of Gold Griff Athlete Agency Amanda Carlo said.

“They just have to kind of find their voice.”

Carlo previously worked with the Chiefs, then started her own company. She admits she found herself in conversations about sports feeling like she couldn’t contribute.

That’s where “Let’s Talk Football” was born.

“We see this as an opportunity for girls to come with their aunt, mom, grandmother, their neighbor and learn together in a setting that’s really inclusive and welcoming,” Carlo said.

“So they’re not embarrassed to ask a question, and they’re really excited to learn and hopefully do it in a way that they feel confident in.”

“We want them to understand it. In settings like at school, or in the office or with their dad or their brother,” Carlo continued.

“We think it’s a great opportunity for people to learn together and build that bond through education.”

Let’s Talk Football is a female-only sports event this Sunday at Chicken N Pickle from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Anyone ages 8 and up is invited to learn about one of Kansas City’s favorite pastimes.

“We want them to understand it. In settings like at school, or in the office or with their dad or their brother,” Carlo said.

“We think it’s a great opportunity for people to learn together and build that bond through education.”

Carlo shared a video of her team practicing for game day. They want to educate girls and women on the finer points of football. To help, they’re bringing in the experts; three former Chiefs players.

“Tim Grunhard, Shawn Barber and Will Shields,” Director Of Win for KC Taylor Obersteadt said.

The Kansas City Glory will also be on hand — the Midwest’s only team in the women’s national football conference.

The fun starts with games, an equipment try-on and throwing instruction.

After halftime, the experts break down interactive explanations of the rules and strategies of football.

“You can learn to throw a football with the Kansas City Glory,” Obersteadt said.

“You can try on football pads. There’s going to be a photo booth.”

In the 1960’s, the Cardinals rolled out the Ladies’ Baseball Clinic. It’s a reason team officials say women fans have cheered for the cards for decades.

Carlo hopes this event will have a similar impact.

“We hope that they ask questions. There are no stupid questions on Sunday,” Carlo said.

“We hope that it empowers everyone there.”

Amanda hopes this is just the beginning. She wants the conversation to go wherever women want. There could be a “Let’s Talk World Cup” or “Let’s Talk Baseball” in the future.
