KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Police Department is investigating a potentially connected deadly shooting and crash early Saturday morning.

According to KCPD, at about 4 a.m., officers were dispatched to the area of 12th Street and Benton Boulevard on reports of a “non-injury accident.”

Upon arrival, officers found an unoccupied car that appeared to have been involved in a crash.

However, after more investigation, police said the car also showed “potential gunshot activity,” as well as evidence that someone may have been injured inside.

Officers said they started gathering information and searching the area for anyone who may have been injured. While searching, they were led behind a nearby apartment building where a man was lying unresponsive with gunshot wounds.

Officers called EMS and the man was later declared dead at the scene. KCPD identified the victim as 20-year-old Michael B. Waylee.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the initial crash report took place on westbound 12th Street just after 1 a.m.

The car involved in the crash had been speeding down the road near the intersection of Benton Boulevard when it sideswiped a car, lost control and crashed into another parked vehicle. Police said the victim then fled the scene.

Detectives are also investigating a reported shooting that took place at about 1 a.m. near 12th Street and Hardesty Avenue.
