KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Police Department has launched a homicide investigation after a person was found dead inside a home following a house fire earlier this week.

According to KCPD, on Friday, Sept. 6, officers and crews with the Kansas City Fire Department were dispatched to the 5700 block of Bales.

Upon arrival, KCPD and KCFD found a person dead inside.

Detectives, including Bomb and Arson, were then called to the scene to investigate the death, which they said was “common” in the case of a fatal fire.

However, preliminary investigations revealed that the circumstances surrounding the death were “suspicious in nature,” and a cause of death could only be determined following further examinations from the Medical Examiner’s Office.

On Sunday morning, police said that the examination concluded that the death was a homicide and that the KCPD Homicide Unit would follow through with investigations.

“The circumstances leading up to the fire and the death of the victim are all still under investigation. The cause of death is not available at this time,” KCPD said. “Homicide detectives will be working with the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the Victim’s identification. It is anticipated that a confirmed victim ID could be significantly delayed.”

If you or anyone you know has information regarding this case, police ask that you contact homicide detectives directly at (816) 234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-8477.
