44th Art Westport breaks attendance record, celebrates local art

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City metro’s largest art fair, featuring local artists, broke attendance records with over 33,000 in Westport this weekend.

Organizers say it’s because of the beautiful weather and the fact that the Chiefs didn’t play this weekend.

With paintings, pottery, wood crafts and more, Art Westport celebrated its 44th year.

Crochet artist Vonda Miller creates stunning, one-of-a-kind crochet art. Her great-great aunt taught Vonda to chain stitch when she was only 7. She stopped for many decades but started crocheting herself masks during the pandemic and then began putting her work on canvas.

“I crochet a single chain and glue it on canvas line by line,” Miller said.

“I do it freestyle so everything you see is never one piece. I don’t draw first, I just go in and do my art.”

Some of Vonda’s pieces take more than 300 hours to complete, which shows her dedication as she’s also a healthcare administrator.

“Yeah, so in the morning before work, I do a lot of my crocheting, and when I come home from work I’m crocheting,” she explained.

Miller also went on to detail how her children inspired her to get her college degree. She earned her master’s degree, setting the example that its never too late to do what you love.

“I love what I do,” said Miller.

“It’s absolutely fun, I truly enjoy it a lot.”
