OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Sunday, September 8 was the very first “Let’s Talk Football” at Chicken N Pickle in Overland Park.

“I knew some baseline information,” said Amanda Carlo, founder of the Gold Griff Athlete Agency.

“But I just didn’t feel confident enough in the rules and the plays in the schemes; I think there’s a lot of nuances in football.”

The event invited women to learn some of the rules of football from current and former Chiefs players: Tim Grunhard, Will Shields, Shawn Barber and Mike Caliendo. Some of the crowd were even invited to line up for a few mock plays and learn how linemen do different jobs.

“There’s so much to learn about football,” said Shayla Tejeda.

“There’s so much going on in the game and moves fast. It’s a quick-paced game.”

Where does Patrick Mahomes rank among the highest paid QBs?

She said that some of the walk-throughs helped her learn the difference between blocking schemes.

“I didn’t realize that the gentleman on the line actually took one step back with their opposing foot and then went towards the line. So, I learned something new,” Tejeda explained.

The event gave out t-shirts, drinks and had a silent auction. There was even a place to make friendship bracelets, “just in proof that you can really do both as a female,” Carlo said.

“You can be an expert on a lot of things, but you can also really be owning your femininity.”

Carlo said that it’s encouraging to see so many women joining the conversation about football.

“We want women and girls to be able to contribute confidently to those conversations,” she said.

“I think Sunday, which typically was a day for fathers and sons or, you know, uncles and nephews, we feel like now girls of all ages can be involved in that.”
