WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Kansas Cosmosphere has shared a photo of New York City taken from space on 9/11.

Astronaut Frank L. Culbertson, Jr. was 255 miles above the earth on board the International Space Station on September 11, 2011, when he heard the reports about the terrorist attacks. As the station passed above the East Coast, he grabbed a digital camera and went to a window that provided a clear view of New York City below.

Culbertson was commander of a three-man crew that arrived at the ISS on August 12. Following the attacks, they spent an additional 94 days in space before returning to Earth on December 17, 2001.

The camera that captured that photo, a Nikon DCS 460, is owned by the Kansas Cosmosphere. It is one of over 5,000 artifacts in the Cosmosphere’s collection .
