How the Buffalo Bills helped build the Kansas City Chiefs dynasty

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills both picked up wins in week 1 , many fans were commenting on how the Bills actually helped to form the Chiefs’ current dynasty.

In the 2017 draft, the Bills traded back with the Chiefs, who ended up using that pick to select Patrick Mahomes , who’s the consensus number-one quarterback in the NFL. Just a few years later, and the Bills have done it again, this time with speedster Xavier Worthy .

In this year’s NFL draft, the Bills traded back yet again with the Chiefs, who then used the Bills’ pick to select Xavier Worthy in the late first round. That move, much like the 2017 trade, could certainly come back to haunt the Bills.

But what about the Bills? Did they get anything of similar value from these trades?

In the 2017 draft, the Bills got back a 2017 first-round pick, a 2017 second-round pick and a 2018 first-round pick from the Chiefs. They used these picks to select cornerback Tre’Davious White, wide receiver Zay Jones and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds.

None of these players are currently playing for the Bills, nor do they compare to Mahomes and the impact he’s had on the NFL.

In the 2024 NFL Draft, the Bills traded their first-round pick, used to draft Worthy, as well as a fourth and seventh-round pick. In return, the Bills received the Chiefs’ first-round pick, a third-round pick and a seventh-round pick.

The first-round pick was traded again by the Bills, the other two picks from the Chiefs were used on defensive tackle DeWayne Carter and offensive guard Travis Clayton.

What’s interesting is that the Bills weren’t apparently interested in Xavier Worthy, who was projected as a late first-round pick, after losing key receivers Gabe Davis and Stefon Diggs.

The Bills’ wide receiver room now looks quite scarce, and it showed in the Bills’ week one win with Josh Allen essentially being forced to score four touchdowns, two passing and two rushing, to squeak by the Arizona Cardinals at home.

Worthy’s historic week one performance is now leaving the Bills Mafia scratching their heads as to why their team keeps doing this.
