Suspect arrested after attempted armed robbery at Overland Park business

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Overland Park police are investigating after shots were fired during an attempted robbery on Tuesday morning near College Boulevard and Oakmont Street.

According to the Overland Park Police Department, around 5:15 a.m. Monday, the officers responded to a caller who reported an aggravated assault.

OPPD was dispatched to the area but could not locate the suspect on foot. At 5:30 a.m., however, officers found the suspect on a traffic camera sitting on a car in the parking lot of a nearby business.

The owner of the car exited the business and confronted the suspect. The suspect pointed his gun toward the owner but did not fire his weapon. The owner of the vehicle ran back into the business and called police.

As officers arrived, they reportedly observed the suspect committing an armed robbery in the parking lot. The suspect had a high-powered rifle later found to be illegally modified.

On-scene officers then took cover and told the suspect to drop the weapon. The suspect then aimed his firearm at one of the officers and shot several times.

At this time, it is unknown if the suspect’s firearm ran out of ammunition or became jammed, but it was reported that the suspect eventually dropped the gun, allowing police to place them in custody.

Law enforcement said no one was hurt during the incident.
