Thousands attend 93rd annual Plaza Art Fair over weekend in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Over 240 artists from all over the country traveled to Kansas City this weekend to take part in the Country Club Plaza’s 93rd annual Art Fair .

Although skies were gray and cloudy, and temperatures slowly began to cool, thousands of local art lovers and Sunday strollers lined up under tents and walked through the Plaza streets to get a good look at some unique paintings, sculptures, fiber and jewelry art.

One booth featuring art from Chicago-native and social studies teacher Derek Christenson was especially impressive.

The educator by day, multi-media artist by night works creates intricate two-dimensional art with the help of vintage license plates, all of which are cut into small pieces and assembled to form a detailed portrait.

His works feature prominent political figures, musicians and athletes, including Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.

Christenson started creating almost eight years ago, and his skills are completely self taught.

“It’s a multi-step process, ” Christenson said. “I start out with a photo reference. I draw it out, and it’s kind of like putting together a puzzle. I have to cut out every single piece that fits into my drawing and then I assemble it, and hopefully it works out the way I envisioned it.”

After a long weekend, Christensen will soon have to return home and inevitably head back to school. And on Tuesday morning, he will walk into a classroom filled with students who are completely unaware that their history teacher is a pretty talanted artist on the side.
