KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A University of Missouri – Kansas City student has been identified as the scooter operator killed Thursday after being struck by a vehicle.

The incident was reported just before noon Thursday. Kansas City police reports the driver of a Ford Focus was speeding northbound when they struck a person on a motorized scooter that was crossing Troost Avenue near E. 51st Street.

KCPD says the driver of the Ford stopped immediately and remained at the scene.

The victim was taken to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead shortly after.

UMKC identified the victim on Friday as Yuxi Wu, one of their conservatory students.

“Yuxi was in the first semester of her studies toward a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance. We are devastated by this tragic loss, and our hearts go out to her family and loved ones. We are providing counseling services to students, faculty and staff during this difficult time for our campus community,” UMKC said in a statement on Friday.
