KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A man who investigators say shot another man multiple times and held two people at gunpoint for hours at a time on Saturday was caught after a chase involving four different agencies.
Lee’s Summit man Kody M. Holmes, 33, was charged in Jackson County with first-degree assault, two counts of kidnapping and three counts of armed criminal action in an alleged crime spree that began in Lee’s Summit and ended near the Jackson/Johnson County line .
According to Lee’s Summit police, officers were sent to an apartment complex at NE Town Centre Boulevard, just southeast of the Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport, for reports of a shooting around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

The victim, a 43-year-old man, was taken to a hospital where he remains in the ICU with critical injuries, including a shattered vertebrae that left him paralyzed from the neck down.
Officers worked with the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department to identify a 33-year-old woman who was also a victim and had been kidnapped from the shooting scene along with a child.
The victim told officers Holmes arrived to their apartment between 4 and 5 in the morning Saturday with a child. Court documents say Holmes argued, fought with, then shot the 43-year-old man in the leg, who retreated into a bedroom bathroom.
According to court papers, the victim said Holmes followed the man and shot at him through a closed bathroom door.
She then said Holmes told her and another child to go into a bedroom and wouldn’t allow them to help the man who was shot. She said they were held at gunpoint for hours, at times with the gun held directly to their heads, and he fired shots past each of their heads.

The victim said they were driven around for hours without any real destination, at times highway signs showed they were headed toward the Warrensburg area, before he let her and one of the children go just before 5 p.m. in Kansas City, Missouri.
The victim called police, who then responded to the apartment, where they found the man who was shot in the bathroom with wounds to his leg and neck.
An alert for Holmes and his vehicle was issued, and around 10:30p.m., Missouri State Highway Patrol spotted his car and tried to stop him. Investigators say Holmes didn’t stop and troopers pursued him with the assistance of the Johnson County, Missouri, Sheriff’s Office, Warrensburg Police Department and Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
After police say he hit stop sticks near Warrensburg, hit patrol vehicles, and turned around to drive back toward Jackson County, a Cass County sheriff’s deputy used a Grappler device that brought Holmes to a stop as he was driving on rims.

FOX4 went to the apartment complex and spoke with neighbors about what happened.
“We are all the way in Lee’s Summit. We come out here to feel safe. We can’t even come out here and feel safe anymore,” a 10-year-resident of the complex shared with FOX4.
Remnants of a crime scene still linger from the investigation.
“It was like 10 police cars outside. It was a lot going on,” she said. “Now we gotta keep our kids in the house. We can’t even sit outside and chill anymore because we never know what’s going to happen.”
“My kids could have been outside while he was shooting,” she added. “We can’t even trust our kids to be outside to run around play like kids because we gotta think who is in someone’s house? Who is arguing? Who has a gun?”
Holmes is currently in the Jackson County Jail and his bond is set at $500,000. He made his first court appearance on Monday afternoon and was referred to the public defender’s office for screening. He’s due back court for a bond review on October 9, and will have a preliminary hearing on October 28.
