KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A local charter school had to evacuate Wednesday morning after a gas line ruptured near 69th Terrace and Oak Street, according to the Kansas City Fire Department.

KCFD said just after 10 a.m. Wednesday, KCFD responded to the area of 69th and Oak on reports of a natural gas leak.

Upon arrival, KCFD found a large-diameter natural gas line that had been hit by construction crews in the area. A news release said Spire Inc. — a natural gas company — was asked to arrive at the scene to help resolve the damaged line.

According to KCFD, crews used their four-gas meter to check a nearby school, Académie Lafayette, and did not find abnormal gas readings. However, as a precaution, the school administrators made the decision to evacuate their students from the building.

KCFD said it did not give any order to the school to evacuate.

The department reported that 8 mph southward winds led to multiple calls of gas smells from the north.

Spire is still on the scene and crews are working to repair the ruptured lines.

No injuries have been reported and KFCD will remain at 69th and Oak until the leak is stopped.
