KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to a fire at a home on SE Silkwood Lane early Friday morning.

Around 2:45 a.m., a neighbor called 911 to report the deck was on fire and spreading to the house.

When the department arrived, the deck and back of the two-story, single-family home was on fire. All occupants had already evacuated the building.

The fire department said that the fire originated on the wood deck and spread up the outside of the house, reaching the attic through the eave. Firefighters managed to control the exterior fire while tackling the fire in the attic, bringing it under control by 2:55 a.m.

The fire caused damage to the deck, the outside of the house, and the attic, while the living area sustained minor water and smoke damage. Crews said they had to remove parts of the ceiling to access the fire in the attic.

The investigation revealed that embers from a patio fireplace on the deck used earlier in the evening had sparked the fire.
