(FOX40.COM) — Two waterways in Yolo County are undergoing testing for potential harmful algal blooms after a “concerning” level of byproduct was detected, according to the Yolo County Department of Community Services’ Environmental Health Division.

Test results from Aug. 2 found increased levels of cyanotoxins in Cache Creek and Lake Washington forcing a health and safety advisory to be triggered.

“These toxins may cause skin irritation, gastrointestinal issues, headaches, and more severe health problems if ingested,” according to the county. “Children and pets are particularly vulnerable due to their smaller size and greater likelihood of coming into contact with or ingesting contaminated water.”

Cache Creek Regional Park Lower Site and Camp Haswell were detected as having increased toxin levels.

“In response to this finding, all water contact activities, including the use of watercraft, are prohibited,” the county wrote in a news release. “Pets and livestock must be kept away from the water, and any visible algae or scum should be avoided. The water is unsafe for drinking or cooking, and boiling or filtering will not make it safe. Consumption of fish and shellfish from this area is strongly discouraged.”

A dangerous level of toxins was detected near the Sailing Club on Lake Washington which is changing rapidly due to tidal flows.

These blooms have been seen in other Northern California waterways when hotter temperatures warm stagnant water that is rich in phosphorus and nitrogen, according to Yolo County.
