(FOX40.COM) — This Sunday marked the return to duty of Officer Kapri Herrera with Galt Police after recovering from a crash in 2021 that took the life of fellow Officer Harminder Grewal.

Herrera and Grewal were on their way to help with the response to the Caldor Fire, which broke out in El Dorado County in August 2021, when they were struck by another vehicle and were hospitalized. The driver of the other vehicle died in the crash and Grewal died less than a week later .

Four Ione businesses cited for serving alcohol to minors

Herrera left the hospital in early September of that year and continued with her recovery for nearly three years before returning to the force nearly three years later.

“Our department has since navigated a difficult road, grieving the loss of Officer Harminder Grewal while standing by Officer Herrera through her incredible journey of recovery,” the department wrote on Facebook.

“We know the community will be just as happy as we are to see her around Galt again,” the message continued.

Herrera has been with Galt Police since early 2021, having been sworn in in February of that year . Before that, she was a volunteer Cadet with Lodi Police for three years .
