(FOX40.COM) — Vaping in schools has been an issue across the country and Stockton’s own Lincoln Unified School District is employing cutting-edge tech to combat this growing epidemic.

In an interview with FOX40.com on Thursday, LUSD Superintendent Kelly Dextraze gave some insight on how implementing vape detectors in school bathrooms works.

Dextraze said that for years, vaping has been a problem in their high schools and middle schools.

The district has been looking to install vape detectors, but finally feels like the technology has reached a point where it is ready to be brought to campuses.

“We have installed site vaping sensors in both of our high schools and it has been busy,” Dextraze.

If the sensors are triggered then a notation is sent to school administrators and school resource officers.

Dextraze said that school staff is pleased with the installation and while some students may not enjoy the new sensors, others are more pleased.

“There are students who are grateful because many students choose not to use the restrooms during the school day because they are not a student who vapes and the bathrooms are full of kids who are vaping,” Dextraze said.

If a student is caught vaping on campus they will have their vape taken away, they will have a one-day on-campus suspension and they will be sent to substance abuse counseling.

Hope this works, but in the past, it seems like chasing people who are already doing something doesn’t really result in anything but a series of punishments. The drug war is a bust. Prohibition leads to more use, that’s just a factually proven idea over the years
