Inmate dies after fight at Sacramento-area state prison

California prison officials are investigating the death of an inmate as a homicide after he was involved in a fight the previous day.

A news release from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said the fight happened at a dayroom at California State Prison Sacramento around 2:55 p.m. on Thursday.

Staff were able to stop the fight and took the inmate, Darryl Hudson, 40, to an outside medical center, where he died on the evening of the following day.

No other inmates or staff were injured, CDCR said.

Five other inmates involved in the fight were placed in restricted housing as investigators from state and Sacramento County officials worked on the case.

One of the other inmates allegedly struck Hudson several times, causing him to lose consciousness, CDCR said.

Hudson had been at CSP Sacramento, also known as New Folsom, since December 2009, serving a sentence of life without the possibility of parole for first-degree murder and first-degree robbery, with enhancements related to the use of a firearm.

He was also serving a sentence of seven years for battery on a non-prisoner at New Folsom.

In an unrelated case from July, another inmate from New Folsom died after an attack by other inmates.
