(FOX40.COM) — According to the Fairfield Police Department, a DUI checkpoint will be set up in the city during the upcoming holiday weekend .

The checkpoint will be operated on Friday at Oliver Road and Hartford Avenue from 7 p.m. to midnight.

“DUI Checkpoints like this one are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence,” Fairfield police said. “Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public.”

The agency added that research indicates that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20% when well-publicized proactive DUI operations are regularly conducted.

“In recent years, California has seen a disturbing increase in drug-impaired driving crashes,” police said. “Fairfield supports the efforts from the Office of Traffic Safety that aims to educate all drivers that ‘DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.'”

Those who take prescription medications, especially ones that could potentially impair someone’s ability to operate a vehicle or other heavy machinery, could receive a DUI. Driving a vehicle under the influence of marijuana can qualify as a DUI as well.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspensions and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.

“Please designate a driver or call for a ride…If you see someone driving you believe to be under the influence, call 911,” police concluded.
