(FOX40.COM) — The City of Sacramento is asking residents to be more mindful when disposing of trash after two refuse vehicles were damaged by trash pile fires.

Items like batteries, propane canisters, electronics and flammable chemicals pose the greatest fire risk, according to the city.

“We know most people don’t think of batteries as ‘hazardous,’ but their potential to start a fire is why they should never be put in with household trash,” said Recycling and Solid Waste Division spokesperson Jesa David said. “It’s important for all of our safety to be aware of how to dispose of potentially dangerous items like batteries, e-waste, propane tanks, chemicals and other household hazardous waste.”

Residents looking to safely dispose of these hazardous waste items can schedule a household junk pickup by calling 311.

Items powered by gasoline-driven motors or propane like camp stoves and lawnmowers need to have all fuel removed before being put out for curbside pickup.

You can return used batteries to Home Depot. They have a cannister you can dump them in.

Though it’s a lot of work, I go through all of the trash every week at my work facility during the rental season when various groups use the facility for their events. I’ve not only pulled out recyclables but also pulled out batteries, flashing LED “toy” sticks, a bad HDTV set, various cables and even a few lighters. My supervisor thinks it’s a waste of time, but it’s an important step in preventing trash fires.
