Around 2:30 p.m. Monday, the Lake Tahoe United States Forest Service said the risk of wildfires is rated ‘very high’ on the National Fire Danger Adjective Rating System scale. A very high rating means that fires will start easily from most causes.

According to the government’s rating model , new fires will “spread rapidly and have a quick increase in intensity, right after ignition.” Small fires can quickly become large, long-lasting, and difficult to control.

Officials said that most wildfires are preventable.

“The public plays a valuable role in preventing wildfires,” the National Interagency Fire Center read on its website. “The national average of human-caused wildfires comprises 87 percent of all wildfire occurrences every year.”

NIFC provided ways to prepare for and prevent fires such as hardening homes against ember intrusion, learning how to properly use outdoor equipment, maintaining vehicles, and planning for evacuations.
