(FOX40.COM) — Residents of the Southside Park neighborhood went another summer without their local city pool after previously undiscovered issues may have delayed its opening past the city’s swimming season.

The City of Sacramento said that part of the pool’s return line had deteriorated beyond repair and would need to be replaced. Replacing the line will require removing and replacing part of the concrete deck around the pool.

The city said that while the final cost of the additional repairs has not been calculated, the “original project budget has sufficient funds to cover the necessary repairs.”

According to the city, the Southside Park Pool has been closed since Summer 2022 due in part to its fiberglass lining deteriorating “beyond its useful life” which posed a health risk to swimmers.

The city secured funding for repairs in June 2023 and after roughly a year of design work and other bureaucratic formalities, the repair work began last June.

At the time, the city said it hoped to open the pool by the end of the summer. Most of Sacramento’s city-owned pools closed for the season after Labor Day weekend.

The city does not have an exact date the repairs are expected to be completed.
