(FOX40.COM) — The source of some mysterious and alarming overnight booms in western Roseville has been uncovered.

Roseville City Council Member for District 5, Scott Alvord posted on Facebook Wednesday morning that the explosive sounds originated from a series of agricultural instruments.

A defensive system of propane-powered sound cannons that generates a large boom was found to be the source of the alarming noise.

According to Sonic Sentinel, a manufacturer of these cannons, says they are a “humane, effective deterrents for discouraging birds and other wildlife from inhabiting unsafe or undesirable locations.”

Alvord wrote that these booms are commonplace when living near agricultural land, but there is typically a form of sound muffling to reduce the sound signature in residential areas.

In a message to Alvord, Placer County Director of Agriculture, Parks, and Natural Resources Josh Huntsinger said, “we were able to track down the source of the booms, and it turns out that it was one of the nearby almond growers, who was scaring off crows who were eating the almonds.”

The cannons have been turned off as of Wednesday as the farmers have begun harvesting their almonds.
