Yuba County judge sentences drunk driver who murdered Lindhurst football coach

(FOX40.COM) — A man convicted of drunk driving and causing a crash that killed a Lindhurst High School football coach was recently sentenced for his crimes.

The case began on Feb 26. when LHS coach Shane Bunn, 34, was driving south on Feather River Boulevard. He was passing a slow-moving vehicle when Larry Lee Anderson, Jr. attempted to pass Bunn and the slow-moving vehicle simultaneously by driving between them at 103 mph, according to the Yuba County District Attorney’s Office. Anderson clipped the slow-moving
vehicle, and then careened into the back of Bunn’s Honda CRV, launching it into an irrigation
canal. Bunn was killed instantly.

After the impact, the DA said Anderson swerved back to the right after hitting Bunn,
clipping a third vehicle before rolling into the orchard west of the roadway. Anderson fled the scene on foot but was found hiding hours later. A blood test revealed that Anderson’s blood alcohol content was double the legal limit. It was his fourth DUI conviction.

Anderson pled guilty to driving under the influence, hit-and-run, and murder. On Wednesday Yuba County Judge Benjamin Wirtschafter sentenced him to serve 15 years to life in state prison.

“Nothing will bring Coach Bunn back, but I hope the sentence in this case will serve as a
warning to others – don’t drink and drive,” said Yuba County District Attorney Clint Curry.

Bunn’s wife and daughter reportedly addressed Anderson through their impact statements at the sentencing. They described spending birthdays and Father’s day at the cemetery rather than
celebrating. After listening to the family relate how he had turned their “worst fear into a living
reality,” Anderson apologized to them.
