(FOX40.COM) — Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg gave his final State of the City address on Thursday as he closes the chapter of leading Sacramento in his decades-long political career.

“If we and I have not finished the task of solving all the complex challenges before us, I hope these years have gotten us closer to achieving them,” Steinberg said.

In Steinberg’s eight years as mayor, many of the capital city’s challenges have evolved, including crime.

According to statistics presented by Steinberg, crime city-wide is down 13.6% on top of the 18% reduction in 2023.

Homelessness is another issue that Steinberg inherited and has been an ongoing battle for the city.

“While homelessness rose statewide, we saw a 41% reduction,” Steinberg continued. “Not solved, but progress.”

A point of pride for Steinberg is the ongoing development of Aggie Square on Stockton Boulevard in South Sacramento.

He says that continued development of the site promises to bring more job opportunities and housing.

“This is not just another project,” Steinberg said. “It will produce 5 billion dollars once it’s built out, annually.”

Steinberg reflected on his time as mayor and said “It has been rich in its challenges and difficulties and just the extraordinary times we’re living through, but it’s also been rich in achievement.”
