SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KRON) — California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D., said in a press release Thursday that a suspicious package was delivered to the California Secretary of State headquarters in Sacramento. Secretary Weber said the unopened package was abruptly given to authorities.

“Field testing and presumptive chemical test by state law enforcement revealed that the material contained within the package was non-hazardous and tested positive for unbleached flour,” said Weber. “While the substance is non-lethal, state and federal authorities will continue to investigate the incident.

Authorities are still combing to locate the source of the package, but believe that this incident may be tied to a recent trend of suspicious packages delivered “to election offices in at least 15 other states,” said the statement.

“We are advising local elections offices to take precautions before handling mail that arrives at their facilities,” said Weber. “We will continue to work with state and federal law enforcement authorities on responding to any threats to California elections officials or workers.
