(FOX40.COM) — Two people were arrested after they were caught with a bag of stolen mail, including checks and credit cards, according to the Fairfield Police Department .

Around 6:57 a.m. on Sunday, FPD received a call from a “vigilant citizen” who saw a man and woman in the area of Pear Tree Lane and Union Avenue rummaging through mailboxes and placing items into a backpack. After officers arrived at the scene, they ran a criminal record check that revealed the man had an outstanding warrant from Solano and Napa Counties.

FPD said they searched the two suspects and found “a substantial amount of mail” that belonged to 48 different people. The mail included credit cards, checks, and identification documents.

The suspects, a 39-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman were arrested and booked into the Solano County Jail for alleged conspiracy, mail theft, identity theft, and drug-related charges.

FPD said it also spent more than five hours going through the stolen items and contacting potential victims in hopes of reuniting them with their property.
