Sacramento State announces plans for new stadium

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KTXL) – Sacramento State has announced plans to build a new stadium at the site of the current Hornet Stadium, with a minimum capacity of 25,000 attendees.

Currently, Hornet Stadium has a maximum capacity of around 21,195 attendees, and it was originally constructed in 1969 (with upgrades made in 1992).

According to a news release from the university, funding for the project has been secured and will not impact the institution’s budget.

“This new, state-of-the-art multi-purpose stadium will be more than just an amazing home to our Hornet athletic teams. It will serve as an entertainment hub for many types of events for all Sacramento State students, alumni, fans and community members to enjoy,” said Mark Orr, Sacramento State’s Director of Athletics.

The stadium will be home to Hornet football, as well as men’s and women’s rugby, men’s and women’s soccer and club sports.

Sacramento State also plans to hold commencement ceremonies at this new stadium, after they were held at off-campus venues for a number of years.

“The feasibility study completed in 2023 shows we not only need the improvements, but we have so much more we can offer our campus and community with a new stadium,” said Sacramento State president Luke Wood.

FOX40 confirmed on Thursday that the planned stadium upgrades have been in the works long before the recent discussions of conference realignment with the Pac-12 and the Mountain West.

The architecture firm Populous, which has worked on notable athletic venues such as Oracle Park and Yankee Stadium, will design the new Hornet Stadium.

Renderings of the proposed stadium will be released in the coming weeks, according to Sacramento State.
