(FOX40.COM) — A Sacramento area middle school student is recovering in the hospital after being hit by a vehicle while riding their bike to school on Thursday morning.

Administrators at Albert Einstein Middle School say that a student was crossing the street at the school crosswalk when a vehicle hit them and fled from the scene.

Albert Einstein Middle School is located at 9325 Mirandy Drive in the Rosemont area of Sacramento.

The student was transported to an area hospital by first responders and the school is staying updated on the student’s condition.

“Unfortunate accidents like this serve as a reminder for all of us, especially students and drivers, to be more mindful of safety in and near our neighborhood school zones,” Albert Einstein Middle School Principal Chase Tafoya wrote in an email to FOX40.com. “Drivers should always use extreme caution and slow down, even when students aren’t visible.”

The California Highway Patrol is looking into the incident as a hit-and-run and is asking any witnesses to the collision to contact them.

Administrators said they will be looking into the crash and see if there is any way they can improve the safety of their school routes.
