(FOX40.COM) — The Rio Vista Bridge is scheduled for needed repairs and updates that will cause multiple days-long closures in late October and into early November, according to Caltrans District 3.

Rio Vista Bridge is the final major crossing of the Sacramento River before it flows into the Delta.

The bridge serves as a vital connection from Southern Sacramento County to Solano County communities like Fairfield and Cordelia.

Caltrans plans to have the bridge closed from 9 p.m. on Oct. 18 to 5 a.m. on Oct. 21 and 9 p.m. on Nov. 1 to 5 a.m. on Nov. 4.

The way the Tower Bridge moves is rare in California

Work on the bridge will include rehabilitating the road surface, replacing railings, installing bridge approach slabs and more.

The project is funded through the Bridge Rehabilitation and Replacement Program.

“These upgrades will improve motorist and non-vehicular bridge users’ safety, restore bridge deck integrity, comply with ADA accessibility requirements and expand access for pedestrians and non-motor vehicles, and improve the overall ride quality,” Caltrans District 3 wrote about the project.

Rio Vista Bridge was designed by Joseph Strauss, who also worked on the Golden Gate Bridge and Tower Bridge. It was completed in 1960 and is one of five vertical lift bridges in California.
