‘Routine stop’ on California highway leads to discovery of 94 pounds of meth, cocaine

(FOX40.COM) — In what is described as a routine traffic stop on a Northern California highway, California Highway Patrol officers discovered nearly 100 pounds of methamphetamine and detained two people on drug trafficking charges.

The CHP said that a stop was made this week on Interstate 5 west of Elk Grove and that an officer “noticed signs of possible drug trafficking.”

A K9 unit from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office checked the vehicle, leading to the discovery of 94 pounds of methamphetamine in the trunk, the CHP said.

As the K9 unit was checking the vehicle, the 34-year-old passenger fled on foot and was detained.

The search of the vehicle also turned up 15 grams of cocaine and $2,077, the CHP said.

A picture shared by the CHP shows dozens of bags filled with the alleged meth on the hood of a patrol vehicle stopped on the highway.

The passenger and another person, 28, were detained and face charges related to drug trafficking. Both are being held on $1 million bail.
