(FOX40.COM) — The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is investigating the murder of an inmate who died at the Folsom prison Saturday morning.

At 3:55 a.m., CDCR staff responded to an alarm and approached a cell occupied by Kyle Cooper and Rahshan Mackey. Officers said Cooper had head trauma and was unresponsive so they called for medical assistance and 911. He was transferred to a hospital and despite life-saving measures he died from his injuries.

His cellmate, Mackey, 38, has been placed in restricted housing pending an investigation, according to CDCR. Mackey was transferred to Folsom from Alameda County in 2021 with two strikes. He was serving a 23-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter with an enhancement for personal use of a dangerous or deadly weapon. He also received an additional two years and eight months while incarcerated for assault with a deadly weapon.
