(FOX40.COM) — A few drivers in Roseville were given a serious scare as chunks of material from the Washington Boulevard Underpass fell on and around their vehicles on Thursday afternoon.

The City of Roseville confirmed with FOX40 on Friday that small pieces of concrete fell from the underside of the underpass forcing a temporary closure of the roadway between Oak Street and Church Street.

Union Pacific, who owns and operates the underpass, said they will be collaborating with city on any needed repairs.

“The rail structure has been inspected twice this year, per federal guidelines, and is safe for rail traffic,” Union Pacific wrote in a statement to FOX40. “There wasn’t any maintenance happening yesterday when the concrete fell.”

Dashcam footage from a person driving through the underpass when the debris was falling caught it hitting a passing vehicle and nearly hitting several other vehicles.

The city confirmed that one person did report having injuries after one of the pieces of concrete hit their vehicle. The driver did go to the hospital as a precaution, but no major injuries were reported.

“Engineers from the City of Roseville and Union Pacific Railroad determined the bridge is structurally sound and is safe to use,” the city wrote in their statement. “The impacted area has a temporary fix while a longer-term solution is determined.”

Roseville City Council Member Scott Alvord shared on Facebook that a safety net has been placed under the area where the concrete fell “in case other pieces fell off.”

Construction of the Washington Boulevard Underpass or Seawell Undpress began in the mid to late 1940s and was completed in 1950.

The underpass eliminated the need for the Lincoln Street railroad crossing between downtown and historic Roseville.
