(FOX40.COM) — Several Northern California residents were surprised by the sounds of water drumming on their roofs and windows on Saturday afternoon.

Around 1:30 p.m., sprinkles turned into downpours in the Sacramento Valley for several minutes. Officials said the summer storm is unusual for August.

“Isolated showers and thunderstorms continue across the Valley, primarily north and along I-80,” the National Weather Service said on social media . “Heaviest rainfall amounts are expected from south of Lake Oroville toward Grass Valley and Blue Canyon.”

Going into Saturday, the Sacramento Valley only had a 20-40% chance of rain forecast, however, the rain prompted flash flood warnings for several areas. The warning is in effect until 7 p.m. for the Park Burn Scar; Big Chico Creek, Mud Creek, Rock Creek, Pine Creek, Deer Creek, Mill Creek, Antelope Creek, and Paynes Creek.

“Remember to stay weather aware and be prepared to evacuate if told by local officials,” NWS said.

NWS added, “Slow down and watch for ponding water on the roadways. Activity will likely continue into early this evening, especially in the foothills and higher elevations.”

Officials said the storm is forecast to wind down in the evening, but it’s possible to catch a few more bursts of rain before it comes to a stop.
