Two dead after one-vehicle crash on US 71 north of St. Joseph

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Missouri State Highway Patrol ( MSHP ) reports that there was a fatal crash involving one vehicle on US 71 Highway this morning, August 24.

MSHP says that the crash occurred as a Dodge Caravan minivan traveled off the right side of northbound US 71. The van then struck an embankment and became airborne, striking a road sign before reaching the ground and overturning.

Both occupants of the vehicle, Kelly Taute, 47, of Merced California and Christie Petersen, 70, of Sheridan, Missouri were pronounced dead at the scene.

MSHP claims that Taute was not wearing a safety device, but Petersen was.

The minivan is reported to be a total loss.
