MUNCIE, Ind. — The City of Muncie has announced that certain W2 documents for their employees had been inadvertently emailed to an unintended recipient, caused by what they called “a sophisticated social engineering scheme”.

On July 12, Muncie discovered that information within these documents may have been given to someone without access to it. This included first and last names, as well as social security numbers. Muncie said they immediately reached out to law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation, which was completed on July 15.

The city said that they do not believe any of the information was or will be misused, but wanted to notify their employees in the pursuit of caution.

In a letter to employees, Muncie also said they are providing their workers with a free 12-month subscription to an online identity monitoring service provided by Kroll. They also suggested their employees monitor their accounts, place credit freezes on accounts if necessary and contact either a credit reporting bureau, the Federal Trade Commission or the Indiana Attorney General if they had any further questions.

Furthermore, the FTC has a guide on what businesses can do if they experienced a data breach, which can be read here .
