INDIANAPOLIS — A man walked into an Indianapolis fast food restaurant with gunshot wounds Saturday night.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were dispatched to 2402 E. 38th Street — a Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen — around 8 p.m. on a report of a person shot. When police arrived at the scene, they located an adult male with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound.

IMPD reported that the man was transported from the scene to an area hospital in stable condition. Due to the nature of his injuries, however, he was not able to tell police exactly where the shooting happened.

Law enforcement canvassed the area, including a McDonald’s located across the street from the Popeyes, searching for evidence of a shooting. As of 9:24 p.m., police had not discovered any evidence related to the shooting at the Popeyes or the McDonald’s.

Per IMPD, investigators obtained security camera footage from the Popeyes that showed the victim leaving the restaurant and then later returning. When the victim came back to the Popeyes, he went inside to seek assistance.

“They do have video here at the Popeyes showing where he left the lot, and a short time later, returned,” IMPD Night Watch Captain Don Weilhammer said during a media briefing. “Upon returning, immediately getting out of the vehicle and going inside the Popeyes (the victim had) blood all over him. So again, we don’t believe it occurred at the Popeyes, but we don’t know where it occurred at for sure.

“We don’t believe it occurred at this intersection because, as you can tell, it’s a very busy intersection. And we really feel that somebody would’ve called in if there were shots fired.”

Officials believe the shooting was an isolated incident that does not pose any ongoing threat to the community.

IMPD is encouraging those that might know where the shooting occurred to call detectives at (317) 327-3475. Alternatively, tipsters can contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317) 262-8477 to remain anonymous.

As of this article’s publication, no additional information on the incident had been made available.
