RICHMOND, Ind. — A 12-year-old is the suspect in a reported armed carjacking that occurred earlier this month in Richmond.

According to officials with the Richmond Police Department, an anonymous tip, as well as a subsequent investigation, led officers to the suspect in an armed carjacking incident that occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 17.

Police said Monday that a woman was washing her at the Jim’s Car Wash off of W. National Road when the suspect approached her and stole her car. The 12-year-old then reportedly drove to the Westwood Apartment complex off of W. Main Street, less than a mile away from the carwash.

As of 4 p.m. Monday, investigators have yet to recover the alleged handgun that was used in the carjacking. Police said they believe the “gun” was likely a toy or prop weapon instead.

A reckless driving report was reportedly made by a witness about 20 minutes after the carjacking. Police said the vehicle description matched that of the stolen car. Witnesses were then later able to help identify the 12-year-old as the suspect, according to police.

Richmond Police Chief Kyle Weatherly said in a post on the department’s social media that the case “underscores the invaluable role (the) community plays in keeping Richmond safe.”

“The anonymous tip we received was crucial in bringing this case to a swift resolution. I also want to commend Detective Paul Hutchison and our Investigative Services Division for their tireless work,” Weatherly said. “Juvenile cases like this highlight the importance of identifying at-risk youth early and providing them with the guidance and resources they need to pursue a path free from crime. Together, we can create a safer future for all.”

Because of the suspect’s age, officials with the department said they will not be releasing any additional information about the suspect as of this story’s publication.
