Driver taken into custody after warrant issued in deadly August crash

UPDATE: Arosieannya Felton was taken into custody on a warrant for reckless homicide and leaving the scene of a deadly crash.

INDIANAPOLIS — Indy police are actively looking to arrest a woman accused of hitting a woman with her car last month on the city’s northwest side, killing the 32-year-old.

Arosieannya Felton, 22, of Indianapolis, was charged Wednesday in Marion County court with reckless homicide, failure to remain on scene of a deadly crash and driving without a license. An active warrant has since been issued for Felton’s arrest.

The charges stem from a fatal car crash on Aug. 18 along W. 28th Street near Riverside Park that killed 32-year-old Dominique Renee Berryhill.

Police said Berryhill was standing near a parked car around 8:15 p.m. that night and talking to a friend. That is when Felton reportedly lost control of her car and hit Berryhill, who was pronounced dead on the scene by medics.

Witnesses of the crash told responding officers they saw the driver of a gray 2013 Dodge Charger “burning rubber,” “smoking their tires,” “doing donuts” and speeding out of the park entrance before the crash. Others described the Charger and an orange car doing burnout competitions in the parking lot and “doing about 60 miles per hour” before pulling out.

After hitting Berryhill, the driver and a passenger in the car then reportedly got out of the car and ran away on foot.

“[One witness] yelled at them ‘What are you doing? Don’t run it just an accident. You are hurt too’,” court docs show.

Officers later found a woman several blocks from the crash scene who identified herself as the passenger in the Charger. The woman reportedly said her friend named “Rosie” was driving the car when the crash occurred.

“[The passenger] stated they were leaving the park when Rosie couldn’t steer the vehicle and lost the brakes,” police wrote. “After the crash, [the passenger] got out and she saw the lady (Dominique Berryhill) on the ground and took off running. She heard people saying don’t run.”

After using open sources to search the driver’s phone number — which the passenger provided — investigators found an account registered to Felton through T-Mobile. Felton’s number had reportedly been used to make a call to 911 after the crash, police said.

Detectives were soon granted a search warrant for the Charger – which had been towed to a police facility. Inside the car, police found a purse containing an ID for Felton and the key fob for the Charger.

Crash data captured by the car’s Airbag Control Module reportedly showed that 5 seconds before crash impact the Charger was moving at 60 miles per hour with 100% pedal acceleration. The speed then went down to 18 miles per hour at 0.1 seconds before impact. The steering input showed the wheel was “going back and forth from left to right” leading up to the crash.

Police then received an anonymous tip on Aug. 20 stating that people on Facebook had been posting who was responsible for the hit and run.

“People were posting Rosie Felton to turn herself in, Rosie Felton is going to jail and told Rosie Felton to come outside we definitely gone jump you,” police said. “Person stated it was Rosie and then shows a picture of the Charger on Rosie Felton’s pageposted on August 19, 2024.”

Detectives searched Felton through the Indiana BMV computer system, which revealed that she had never received a valid driver’s license. Police said the Charger was registered to Felton’s boyfriend – a man she had reportedly been hiding with.

A Probable Cause Affidavit for Felton’s arrest was filed Wednesday in Marion Superior Court charging her with Level 4 felony failure to remain on scene, Level 5 felony reckless homicide and Class C misdemeanor driving without a license. An active warrant has been issued for her arrest.
