Fire breaks out at ‘squatter-occupied home’ on near east side of Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Fire Department responded to a blaze on the near east side of the Circle City Sunday morning.

According to a Facebook post , crews were sent to the 2800 block of East New York Street around 6:38 a.m. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they discovered heavy smoke and flames pushing from a residence.

Initial reports IFD received indicated there may have been people inside the home. After a search of the residence, crews did not find anyone inside it.

IFD described the building that was on fire as a “squatter-occupied home.” The blaze affecting the house was extinguished in 20 minutes.

In its Facebook post, IFD reported that nobody was injured during the fire. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
