2 students arrested for making threats at Marion Community Schools

MARION, Ind. — Marion police have arrested two juveniles for allegedly making online threats at two schools within Marion Community Schools.

The Marion Police Department confirmed Monday afternoon that two juvenile students have been placed under arrest and taken into custody for their alleged roles in the threats directed at McCulloch Junior High School and Justice Intermediate School.

MPD said its Criminal Investigations Division in collaboration with the Grant County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI collected evidence that reportedly points to the two detained juveniles being responsible for posting and circulating the online threats.

After their arrest, the two juveniles were placed into Grant County Juvenile Probation. After becoming aware of the online threats, MPD said it provided additional officers and security resources at all Marion Community Schools for Monday classes.

MPD confirmed that no incidents “were encountered or reported” after the initial threats were posted online.

Marion Community Schools said it initially became aware of the social media posts Sunday night and immediately began an investigation after alerting MPD.

Marion Police Chief David Gilbert shared the following statement following the two arrests:

The Marion Police Department, like the Marion Community Schools leadership, take threats to the safety of our children seriously. Students striving to learn deserve to do that in a safe environment and we will do all we can and will utilize all our resources to make that a reality. As far as the people who make threats to harm others in this way, we will do all that is in our power to provide for accountability for them within the law. MPD’s crystal clear message is this: leave our children alone and let them gather and learn in safety!
