Why hitting the snooze button means you’re not getting your best rest

How many alarms do you set to wake up?

How many times does your alarm go off before you get out of bed–and how many times do you hit the snooze button?

A sleep expert says if your answer is more than one, you’re not getting your best sleep.

According to sleep psychologist Alicia Roth with the Cleveland Clinic, the more times you hit the snooze button, the more you’re interrupting your sleep cycle.

To get the best, most refreshing rest, Roth suggests setting your alarm for the time you actually have to get up. If that would represent a big change for your morning, Roth said you can slowly work your way down over time.

You could also put your alarm clock on the other side of the room so you have to get up to turn it off.

Roth also recommends maintaining the same sleep schedule during the weekend.

“A lot of us have a tendency to go to bed and wake up later on the weekends than on weekdays,” Roth said. “This makes it really difficult to wake up on Monday morning and prompts us to have multiple alarms or snoozes.”

Bottom line, according to Roth: the more consistent you can be through the week, the easier it will be to get up with that first alarm on Monday morning.
