    Chicago man sentenced after deadly Kokomo shooting in December 2020

    KOKOMO, Ind. — A Chicago man was sentenced to more than 40 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to shooting a man in Kokomo in late December 2020.

    According to a sentencing order recently issued in Howard County Court, Terrance Ben was sentenced to 55 years, with 10 years suspended, after he pleaded guilty to murder. This comes after Ben was arrested in February 2021 in relation to the December 2020 shooting.

    On Dec. 23, 2020 , Ben shot 42-year-old Sharman Pearson II several times in the 800 block of Broadway Street in Kokomo. Pearson was pronounced dead after he was taken to a local hospital.

    The order reads that out of the total sentence, Ben will serve 42 years in the Indiana Department of Correction, followed by 18 months in the county’s community corrections work release program and 18 months of in-home detention. After that sentence, Ben will serve 10 years of supervised probation.

    According to previous reports, several more individuals were also arrested in connection with the shooting. All the individuals who were involved pleaded guilty and were subsequently sentenced, including:

    • Kevonte Tyler
      • Pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder charge, Level 2 felony, sentenced to 25 years, 17.5 of which will be in the IDOC in Aug. 2022
    • Amari Deaarion Anderson
      • Pleaded guilty to assisting a criminal who committed murder, a Level 5 felony, sentenced to 6 years, 5 of which will be in the IDOC in Oct. 2022
    • Marquis Darrionta Herron
      • Pleaded guilty to assisting a criminal who committed murder, a Level 5 felony, sentenced to 6 years, 5 of which will be in the IDOC in April 2022
    • Dion Creed Smith
      • Pleaded guilty to assisting a criminal who committed murder, a Level 6 felony, sentenced to 2 years probation in Sept. 2021
    • Kyron Ardion McKnight
      • Pleaded guilty to assisting a criminal who committed murder, a Level 5 felony, sentenced to 6 years, 5 of which will be in the IDOC in April 2022
    • Alexis James
      • Pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of false informing, sentenced to 1 year probation in April 2022
