IMPD shoot, injure man during welfare check on Indy’s north side

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis police are investigating after a man was injured when a welfare check at a north side apartment complex ended in gunfire. No officers were hurt.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department crews were called around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday to an apartment complex in the 7800 block of River Road to perform a welfare check.

Upon arrival, officers reportedly found a disturbance between a man and a woman. At some point during the altercation, at least one IMPD officer fired their gun.

The man involved in the disturbance was reportedly struck by the gunfire. He has since been taken to a local hospital where he is listed in stable condition. The latest IMPD update around 1 p.m. said the man is awake and breathing. The woman involved in the disturbance was not hurt.

Online police records indicate that IMPD was initially called around 11:25 a.m. to 7811 River Road for a welfare check.

No other information was immediately provided. FOX59/CBS4 has a crew on the way to the scene to gather more information.

This is the eleventh time that IMPD officers have been involved in a shooting this year, according to FOX59/CBS4 records. The most recent shooting occurred at a Lawrence motel along Pendleton Pike after officers attempted to serve a warrant.
